A tragic altercation left one man dead and another facing multiple charges.

Authorities say a violent confrontation between neighbors ended in the death of one man, and the suspect, identified as Gerald Lee Vandermeer, 55, is now facing multiple charges, including murder.

Authorities block off entrance to fatal scene.

According to records filed in 5th District Court, at around 5:30 p.m. on February 12, 2025, the Iron County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) responded to a report of a stabbing and gunshot. Upon arrival, they encountered Vandermeer, who reportedly had multiple lacerations to his hands and face. Vandermeer told deputies he had met the victim a few days earlier, and they had argued over their dogs.

On the evening of February 12, Vandermeer reportedly brought a case of beer to the neighbor’s house to resolve the dispute, and they began drinking together. He stated that the two later argued, but he couldn’t recall the details of what happened next, only that he remembered heading home afterward.

A family member reportedly found Vandermeer in his vehicle around 5:30 p.m. and called law enforcement. Vandermeer was transported to Cedar City Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance.

The Iron Metro SWAT team was dispatched to the scene to help secure the area and assist with the apprehension of the suspect.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for the victim’s residence, where they allegedly discovered the neighbor deceased from multiple stab wounds. During the execution of the warrant, investigators reportedly found THC gummies, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

After being medically cleared, Vandermeer was transported to the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, where he was read his Miranda rights and agreed to speak with investigators.

Vandermeer confirmed he had met the victim three days earlier and had visited him several times since. On the day of the incident, Vandermeer told authorities he arrived at the victim’s house at around 2 p.m., bringing beer and a bottle of vodka. The two drank together, watched television, and conversed before the victim showed Vandermeer his motorcycle. Vandermeer said the two then went back inside the victim’s house.

During the interview, Vandermeer reportedly provided investigators with detailed descriptions of the victim’s home, including the condition of various items inside. He acknowledged getting into a physical altercation with the victim but stated he couldn’t remember how the fight started or what happened during it. Afterward, Vandermeer said he went to his sister’s house nearby.

The victim reportedly died from multiple stab wounds, including two significant wounds to his back, according to an on-call medical examiner.

Vandermeer is now facing several charges including one first-degree felony for murder, one class A misdemeanor for unlawful possession of a firearm, two class B misdemeanors for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia and one class C misdemeanor for intoxication.
